Kadayawan Festival 2018 Davao City

There is a gathering of Davaoeños at the foot of Mt. Apo. They’ve brought the best of the year’s produce – fruits, vegetables, rice, nuts, berries – everything that they managed to grow on the fertile lands of Davao’s 11 tribes. The bounty is laid on a mat on the ground as loud singing emanates from the crowd, prompting many to start dancing and exalting praises. The people are speaking and singing in different languages but praying to one diety – Manama – to whom the united tribes of Davao give thanks. This ritual is the origin of the modern Kadayawan Festival, the local community’s thanksgiving celebration of nature, life, and abundant harvest in the coming year.

Today, it has transformed into a large festival that takes the colorful culture of Davao to the streets. In 2017, the highlight of the festival was Kadayawan Village, in which there was a traditional house built to showcase the culture of each of Davao’s 11 ethnolinguistic tribes. During the opening ceremony, dubbed Pag-abli sa Kadayawan, each of the tribes performed their respective rituals for their houses – a cacophony of sacred songs and dances to signal the beginning of the festival. This was followed by the reenactment of how the 11 tribes first settled along the Davao River.

Another reason to see the festival is the Dula Kadayawan, wherein locals compete against each other in traditional lumad and Muslim games. Meanwhile, Hiyas sa Kadayawan put a different spin on the classic beauty contest as Davaoeño beauties who live urban lifestyles are tested on their knowledge of their own indigenous roots. These are why Davaoeños are deeply in touch with their roots.

Kadayawan Festival happens yearly in Davao City during the third week of August. Apart from the competitions, colorful costumes, indigenous music, and dancing in the streets, another reason to visit Davao during this time is the cheap and high quality produce that will be available for purchase. Don’t you dare leave Davao without at least having one bite of the local durian fruit. For first-timers, once you get past the strange and strong smell, you’ll be surprised at how yummy it actually is – and even if you don’t like it, at least you can say you’ve tried it.

Kadayawan is actually just one of a number of reasons why you should see this city in the south. Philippine Airlines details how Pearl Farm and Mount Apo in Davao are some of the other popular tourist attractions that you can visit when you’re in the city. In case you arrive too early or too late for Kadayawan Festival, there’s no shortage of things to do in this city. You can also check out the Philippine Eagle Centre to see some of the magnificent eagles in captivity as well as learn more about the country’s efforts to preserve this and other endemic bird species in Mindanao.

If you’re the type of traveler who needs some quiet time in the middle of an adventure, there are several awesome books that you can take with you on your trip. Whether you’re waiting at a terminal or sitting in your hotel room, reading a book is a good break from staring at your phone/laptop and reviewing your own travel photos. After all, a great book is a good excuse to step away from the keyboard from time to time.

Flytpack VIP - First Year Anniversary

Last month, I was invited to attend Very Important Party of Flytpack to celebrate their First Anniversary  at Pitmaster's Smokehouse BBQ in Kapitolyo, Pasig City. Flytpack Travel Pocket Wifi has been my travel buddy when I was in Japan. I remember when I got lost and tried asking directions from the locals, but they can't talk to me in English, so it was helpful to have an internet connection to check Google Maps. Whew!

Flytpack (www.flytpack.com) offers travel add-on services to assist budget-conscious tourists to maximize their travel plans. To address the main concern of jetsetters regarding roaming charges (I hate it!), Flytpack offers a travel pocket wifi which allows users to connect devices anytime, anywhere for as low as PHP200 per day, making it easier to share travel memories to families and friends.

They prepared activities for us that we really enjoyed.

Love this drink.

I also love the food served by Pitmaster's Smokehouse BBQ

"One of the main reason why we came up with this service is to battle the expensive data roaming charges outbound travelers face after each trips," says Looi. "People are fed up with the enourmous amount of payments they have to face. These bill-shocked customers tend to look for local hotspots from some establishment which is not secured and may cause identity theft at the very least."

Flytpack's exclusive partnership with several telcos spanning 60 countries allows its customers to get the exact speed as the locals do. Oh, they will be also expanding in Cebu City, so my friends living in Cebu can now avail and experience their service. YAY!

I met new friends with the same interest - Traveling! We shared our experiences using Flytpack and what countries we visited.

Good Food Tour Philippines - Dessert Edition

"I will go back to Muay Thai and Yoga and go on less carb diet." I said a week ago. I searched for a gym already and conditioned myself to start this weekend, but heyaaaa, I haven't started yet I already have a cheat day! I was invited to join Group Food Tour Philippines - Dessert Edition - HUHU Desserts guys, I can't say NO.

foodpanda heads to the south to have a taste of the most indulging desserts one should taste. Allow us to share our sweetest Good Food Tour featuring some of the best restaurants from Alabang Town Center, Muntinlupa.

So happy to see Anne of Anne's Scribbles and Doodles my blogger sister from Cebu to Manila! :)

The word dessert has so much to offer, from the sweetest chocolates, to cakes and cutie cupcakes, different flavors of ice cream, and even crepes. These are what we are longing for every after meals or even when we are in the middle of deadlines. As they say, stressed when spelled backwards is Desserts. I guess it always cures a stressful situation, Yeah? Although sometimes we are on a “strict diet” once the dessert has been served we’re like, “oh no! Cheat day it is!” I mean, hey it’s sweets! Who wouldn’t enjoy having a bite right?

So what DIET really means is "Did I just Eat That?

Bizu

First in line for the 5th Good Food Tour adventure is Bizu which started last 2001 as a kiosk in Glorietta and eventually grown to more branches and extended their menu from wide variety of pastries to great tasting french and Mediterranean food. From different best tasting macarons, chocolate truffles, cakes to other pastries, Bizu has really been a sophisticated brand, “Our Pastries are very delicate and each menu item that we make has an artistry into it,” says Anna Sadang, Marketing Officer of Bizu.

Strawberry Cheesecake

Salty Egg Macarons for the win!

Cold Stone Creamery

Next stop, Cold Stone Creamery which has 20 branches all over Metro Manila, Tagaytay, and Pampanga. Cold Stone is named after their way of preparing their ice cream together with the mixins into their freezing cold and sanitized granite stone. This unique way of preparation originated in Arizona, USA. We are surprised since this creamery doesn’t only offer best flavors of ice cream but brings great entertainment to their customers by juggling and throwing of ice creams (Yep! Can you imagine that? It’s super fun!) to keep a fun and lively atmosphere. “We always emphasize customer service at the top and because we value our customers so much, we want to give them something that they’ll never forget, a fun experience at Cold Stone,” says Rebecca Fernandez, Training Manager. Aside from their ice creams, Cold Stone also offers ice cream cakes, shakes, and smoothies.

While waiting for our ice cream, I was challenged to do "Ice Cream Catch Challenge" I'm not sure if that's how they call it, but all you have to do is catch the ice cream using their cup and it's yours for free! Here's the video of me during the challenge. Wohooo! Find out if I catched it or not. :D

After the fun challenge - tadaaaah!

Thousand crepes which is basically the Mille Crepe are handmade paper thin layers of no less than 20 layers of crepes. It has light pastry cream in between and is topped with caramelized crust and this is what Paper Moon is known for. Just when everybody thought that our bodies are full of sweets for the day, we really can’t say no to Paper Moon’s Mille Crepe and new Valentine’s special cakes and beverages. “Since the Filipino market are always looking for something new, we are committed to innovating our thousand crepes into different flavors that we know they can enjoy,” says Arlene Alinea, the Marketing Manager that handles Paper Moon Boutique and Café.
